If you have spent any time with me, whether in person or right here in our local neighborhood community called the internet, you are already aware of the fact that I’m a bit of a space enthusiast. As a kid growing up in the 80’s, I was fascinated with the Shuttle program. It was a passion of mine that seemingly had been placed into a cardboard box, and put on the top shelf of a closet. Every so often, it was dusted off and looked at, but for many years, very few even knew this about me. Until 2011.

I consider July 7th and 8th, 2011, as two of the most important days of my life, and I say that with no exaggeration. The two days that I spent as a guest of NASASocial, standing in the shadow of Atlantis, and watching her launch for the very last time sparked something in me; a passion that had been hidden away, dormant. It heightened my already existing awareness of the importance of innovation, of passion, and most of all- collaboration. In two days, my childhood passion was once again ignited, fueled by wonder, awe and messages of optimism.

When I was offered the opportunity to preview Ron Garan’s book, The Orbital Perspective, I scanned the description and knew in a heartbeat that his message was exactly what I had felt. Besides, he was a Westchester home-grown astronaut from the same city where I too was born: Yonkers, New York!

Ripples of Hope Garan Quote SCHWARKAs I read through the book, I found myself nodding in constant agreement. I couldn’t help but beam with enthusiasm, knowing that there are others who shared the same hopeful aspirations for society, and who believe that we can, and must, do better for future generations. It is our responsibility to dream bigger, to challenge the status quo and to nurture empathy in ourselves as well as others. I finally have a name for the view that I have always had of our world: Orbital Perspective!

Even better than having a name to call this way of thought, is having the ability to share with others how they too can switch gears to obtain this profound perspective. This book offers its readers insight on how to achieve an Orbital Perspective without ever leaving the earth. Ron Garan’s book relays a message of hOPe, and that is a message well worth sharing.

Ron Garan’s book, The Orbital Perspective, is not just for space enthusiasts. It is for leaders, for dreamers, for innovators and for those searching for ways to have a positive impact in our world. And really, isn’t that all of us? If not, it should be! #TheKeyIsWe

*Westchester locals: I’ve heard that Little Joe’s Coffee and Books is carrying his book. Also, be on the lookout for updates about a few local events in the near future!

**I was given a free copy of The Orbital Perspective to read and review, but my sentiment is, without question, my genuine assessment and opinion. As always.
